THE MOTHMAN
Author: Caeleigh
The idea of a weightless creature or entity that can approach a car at almost 100 miles per hour
is not the most comforting idea when it comes to a “helpful” being. When one wants something, or
someone, that can help us or our country in a time of need, one wants them to fit a certain collection
of characteristics. One looks for kind eyes, soft completion, soothing voice and perhaps older than
themselves. he Mothman, originating from Point Pleasant, West Virginia, does not, in any way, fit into
that distinctive uniqueness.

The name Mothman stemmed from an Ohio newspaper editor that got it from the alleged “Big
Bird” sightings. Descriptions that surrounded the Mothman have been very consecutive in the
reports. Most have described him (or her, for that matter) as a man-sized creature, clad with large
wings that closely resemble a moth (go figure). Although the creature is man-sized, ranging to about
6 and a half feet tall, the layout of the being doesn’t resemble a human. The eyes have been seen
not on the head, but in the chest. The eyes have been described as large as a large animal, even a
bear, and as red as the devils himself.

Those who have had experiences with the “Mothman” have explained them as both confusing
and frightening. On November 15th in 1966, four eyewitnesses, all in the same car, claimed to have
seen the Mothman standing in plain sight at the West /Virginia Ordnance Works (and abandoned
WWII TNT factory). Upon seeing this phenomenon, they drove away in a scarily fast speed. They all
claimed their car got up to 100 miles per hour and the Mothman had no troubles catching up and
retaining speed.

The TNT area in Point Pleasant remained to be a popular place for Mothman sightings. The next
day after the first reported sighting, another was witnessed by a group of six people after the area
was finely combed by a collection or armed townspeople. They were visiting some friends in a
nearby ‘igloo’ (concrete dome-shaped dynamite storage structures erected during WW-II) then
started back to their car. Upon approaching the car, they saw a grey-ish figure that seemed to rise up
from a crouching position from the ground next to their car out the window. The creature was tall and
also had the large glowing red eyes. One of the eyewitnesses decided to phone the police upon
seeing the individual. When the person was on the phone, the creature walked rather slowly to the
porch of the igloo and stood on the porch, peering at them through the window.

After these eyewitnesses claimed to see the Mothman, there were several more sightings
between November 24th 1966 and early 1967. Some eyewitnesses said that they just saw the
Mothman and were confused by the whole ting. Others said the creature actually flew along side their
car as they traveled down the street. There were some that saw it in there lawn and when they went
to get a second opinion, the being disappeared.

There are several different beliefs about the Mothman that stems from several natural and
physical catastrophes. Some people believe that the Mothman appears for people to warm them of
the things that are to happen that are disastrous. The Mothman has appeared before, during and after
some major disasters, and that has led people to believe that the Mothman is causing these
disasters or warning us about them.

I believe that these appearances are a warning for the worst to come, and the creature is not
causing them. Perhaps that Mothman is a sort of guardian angel for all of us as a whole, or at least of
Point Pleasant. I think it’s only a matter of time until every town or state has their own mass guardian
angel. Why this creature only decided to show itself in this year or so time period is still a question
that puzzled some people. There have been some sightings later in the years to follow, but none as
extensive as the ones during the 1966-67 time periods. In conclusion, I believe this creature was
doing more good than bad, never physically harming a human. This grey moth-like being has been
very peaceful and calm, and not destructive in any way.
