ELOISE ASYLUM
Westland

Originally built as a poorhouse for the mentally ill in 1839, Eloise was one of the largest
mental hospitals in the country.  As with most former mental asylums, Eloise is very well
documented as being haunted and still very active.   As the history of this place has been
recorded, by the 1950s, many many reports of patients being mistreated surfaced including
terrible beatings, medication misuse/overdose and electroshock therapy.  Apparitions are
seen roaming the site, disembodied voices are heard.  Growls and moans are heard around
what was once the playground that was built for employee's children.
HURON HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE
Ann Arbor

This is one of the creepiest Michigan haunting stories I have run across.  It involves a young
girl named Mary who apparently was walking along the cat walk above the stage when she fell
to her death.  This happened in the 70s but she has been seen since up in the catwalk
wearing a pink dress.  It is a school tradition that seniors in drama, after their final play, spray
paint their names on the wall in the prop room.  Shortly after Mary died, her name was found
on the wall as well, only it was 17 feet up the wall and upside down!
OLIVET COLLEGE
Olivet

Most of the strange phenomena occur in the Liberal Arts College where things have been
reported to be seemingly coming out of the walls.  Objects move around by themselves and
mysterious music has been noted by security guards to come from dorm rooms which are
empty.
CRESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
Dearborn Heights

Kind of an odd occurrence here as the computer lab seems to be haunted by an older senior
student who could not pass computers and, therefore, could not graduate.  It is said that anyone
that sits at his old computer, computer #25, the computer acts up, all the student's work is
already done and anyone using that computer gets an A in the class!  Slightly more sinister and
scary, ghosts are said to walk the halls at night, empty classrooms have auditory activity that
cannot be explained, things move by themselves and voices are heard to be so clear and close
to students in the daytime that they are thought to be real until the students discover the voices
came from nowhere!
CALUMET THEATER
Calumet

Quite a few ghosts are said to reside here, chiefly of actress Helena Modjeska who has been
spotted throughout the theater.  Also, a murder took place in 1903 of a man who is sighted and
heard screaming in the night.  A little girl named Elanda Rowe also died on the site and she is
heard screaming to this day.
BOWER'S HARBOR INN
Traverse City

This is one of northern Michigan's most famous haunts. There are multiple stories of the
property.  The first being that this was a home that was built in the 1880s by Captain Bower for
his wife, who happened to be very ill.  Capt Bower hired a nurse to help his sick wife, but then
ended up having an affair with the nurse.  His despondent wife then hung herself in the elevator
shaft.   The other story connected to this award-winning restaurant was that it was willed to a
woman named Genevieve by her late husband, but it was all he left her.  The rest of his assets
were left to his mistress.  Genevieve eventually died in the house and it is said she still hasnt
left.  It is believed that she still walks up and down the stairs, blows out candles and her image
has been seen in an antique mirror that hangs in the ladies second floor restroom.
DONUT HOLE
Roscommon

Growing up in the area, Ive heard these stories for years.  This small restaurant has been
rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl, who appears in the doorway to the back door
as well as near the bathrooms.  No one knows who she could be. Also, in the woods behind the
business, supposedly there have been many suicides over the years.
RAYBURN LODGE
Grayling

This lodge was actually moved from the original property to a different part of town, but it had
been abandoned for years at that point.  When it was along the Ausable River, story has it that
four kids (three girls and one boy)snuck into the abandoned building and held a seance because
of all the haunting stories they had heard.  During the course of the seance, an apparition was
spotted across the river that looked like a lumberjack, who then pointed at the one boy in the
group and started across the river towards a boy.  When the ghost got about halfway across the
river, he suddenly disappeared.  Immediately, the boy began to vomit violently.  He freaked out
and ran toward his car.  When he got there, he was surrounded by three barking dogs.  He
jumped in the car and the dogs disappeared.  All of the kids left the area but every time the boy
goes anywhere near where the lodge was, he gets violently ill.
REGENT THEATER
Allegan

Well documented haunt, investigators were physically touched in the lobby, shadow people
spotted in the projection room by several investigators, three positive photos, numerous
temperature drops and one EMF spike were documented.
GRAND RAPIDS HOME FOR VETERANS
Grand Rapids

This home first opened in 1886, intended to house Civil War veterans.  To this day, these
ghostly men are seen wandering the grounds still in uniform.
RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Dearborn Heights

In 2002, a girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes apparently dove into a closed pool and
cracked her head open and died.  People since have reported seeing her roaming the halls
and in the pool area.  Students have reported hearing her say their names but when they turn,
she isnt there.
BAKER COLLEGE
Owosso

Before Baker was established, the property was home to a small Christian college.    Some of
the original dorm rooms were left and added to when Baker was built.  It is in these original
rooms that there have been many reports of  cold spots, especially one room on the first floor
where reportedly a girl hung herself years ago.   Were you to visit Baker, you would probably
see dark shadows darting just out of the corner of your eye as well as hearing noises that
appear to be coming from inside the walls.
BATH HIGH SCHOOL
Bath

Andrew Kehoe, unable to afford to pay his taxes, lost his farm to foreclosure.  On May 18, 1927,
he dynamited the local high school, killing 45 people, mostly school children, furious that his
taxes had been increased to pay for the new high school.  He then went home, shot and killed his
wife, then killed himself.  The site was then turned into a little park in tribute to all who were killed
there.  It is no surprise that this location is reported to be so active.  Many cold spots as well as
EMF fluctuations and strange EVPs are common here.
THE WHITNEY
Detroit

This popular and well-known restaurant was once the home of David Whitney and is said to be
haunted by him to this day.  There are many reports of phenomena including doors mysteriously
opening and closing when no one is there, the elevator operating on its own, cold spots as well
as table settings being moved by unseen hands.  The apparition of a man is also seen, widely
believed to be David Whitney himself.
STATE HOSPITAL
Traverse City

There have been many stories of hauntings at this site that have been told and retold over the
years.  The hospital itself is undergoing construction now to be made into apartments and I
believe a restaurant, but the site itself still has the power to be daunting.  There are many
buildings to this complex, some were demolished years ago, some are still used by Munson
Hospital and yet others are hidden back in the trees surrounding the site.  Various ghosts have
been seen wandering the grounds of the hospital and are heard echoing from the psychiatric
wards.  Small children and elderly people have been reported to appear and disappear on
different floors, there is even said to be a disfigured creature that appears from the tunnels and
the basement area.  Before the construction began, lights would be seen on different floors even
though the building hadn't had power to it for years.  Several legends have been told by
generations of trespassing youth over the years including if you try to take religious materials
into the hospital, they will be destroyed before you can enter; the only place this was said not to
happen was in the chapel.
FORREST ROBERTS THEATRE - NMU
Marquette
\
Ive actually seen this ghost myself coming out of the elevator, carrying a mop, smiling.  He looks
very real and is a friendly older man who worked as a janitor for the college.  He died from a
heart attack in the elevator on his way from the basement.  He has been seen numerous times
throughout the theater building.
THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE
Borculo

This one room schoolhouse is now a well-known restaurant.  It is said to be haunted by Ms.
VanMoss, a teacher that taught years ago who was said to be extremely cruel to the children.
One day, she struck a child in the head so hard that the child died immediately.  Now there are
present-day sightings of a lonely little child sitting alone at a booth in the corner who then
suddenly is no longer there.  There have also been some odd reports of silverware being thrown
by unseen hands.
THE BRASS LANTERN
Houghton Lake

This restaurant no longer exists, the location is now a Walgreen's Pharmacy, but when it was still
a restaurant/bar, supposedly at the end of the bar on the #2 stool, a man could be seen to
appear and disappear and there was a very eerie feeling in the bar So far, this appitirion has not
yet been seen in the current building.
BORGESS HOSPITAL
Kalamazoo

Many, many reports of activity here, especially in the section of the hospital known as 1 North
where children staying there have reported feeling like they are being watched.  A pair of
glowing red eyes are seen in the room across the hall from the nurse's station.  Other reports
include seeing apparitions of the nuns who used to run the hospital years ago along with random
red lights appearing and disappearing.
CLARKSTON CINEMA
Clarkston

When this theater was running, there were numerous reports of shadow people running across
the movie screen as well as a phantom girl who would sit on the stage by the screen.
FENTON HOTEL
Fenton

Many phenomena reported by staff at this restaurant, which was once a hotel years ago.
Footsteps are heard in the upper levels when staff are downstairs closing for the night, glasses
are mysteriously broken and shutters open and close on their own.  Perhaps the creepiest
occurrance reported here is that staff sometimes take drink orders in the bar for people who
then seemed to have disappeared!
HIGHVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Dearborn Heights

Very sad story of a little girl named Mary who was yelled at by a teacher and ran into the
bathroom, then tried to crawl through the air vent in one of the stalls.  Unbeknownst to her, it
was actually an air conditioning unit that turned on automatically while she was crawling through
it and the blades killed her as they cut through her body.  The door to that particular stall was
removed so as to render the stall unusable and there is said to be a stain beneath the vent
where she was killed that is unable to be covered.
CAPITOL THEATRE
Flint

Singing is heard coming from the empty balcony, multiple equipment failures, screams, moans
and tapping are all experienced here.

MT PLEASANT CENTER
Mt Pleasant

This is said to have been one of the largest but poorest run State Hospitals for the criminally
insane.  Once someone was sent here, no matter what their crime, they were there
forever...apparently no releases were granted.  Other than one side of the building where the
worst of the worst were chained, the patients were allowed to wander freely, no fences or
electrical locking doors and, of course, many escaped.  An orderly was tortured, raped then
murdered when one of the patients broke into her house, which was provided by the hospital
and was only a few hundred feet from the hospital.  Police guards patrol the grounds because
there are still buildings that are being used but the mental hospital has since been closed down.
Still, shadowy apparitions are seen roaming the grounds and moans, screaming, crying and
voices are commonly heard.
RAMSDELL THEATER
Manistee

It is said that founder TJ Ramsdell haunts this theater, closing doors and knocking light fixtures
off the wall.  In a promotional film for the theater taken a few years ago, supposedly the image
of Ramsdell is seen floating near the balcony seats.
OTTAWA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
Grand Rapids

The hauntings occur in the North House Lecture Hall, where students and teachers report the
sound of water falling but no water being found, disembodied footsteps, appliances turning
themselves on mysteriously as well as a report of one student's hair being pulled by unseen
hands.
HOLMDENE AT AQUINAS COLLEGE
Grand Rapids

This property was once home to the Lowe family.  One of their children drowned on the
property and is said to have never left.  Water faucets turn on and off on their own and lights
turn on and off in secured buildings on the site.
FELT MANSION
Holland

The house was built in the 1920s by Dorr Felt, an inventor, for his wife Agnes.  Agnes died
shortly later of a stroke, she died in her room.  Mr. Felt remarried but his new wife hated the
house and it was eventually turned into a home for boys, a home for nuns and then was used
as a state police post.  Currently, the house is being restored to its original grandeur.  It is said
the Felts still reside here, especially Agnes.  The ballroom is the most haunted as doors open
and close on their own in Agnes' room and voices are heard.  Ghost tours are now given in
the house with the proceeds used for restoration.
HENRY FORD ESTATE
Dearborn

Many full apparitions seen at this beautiful estate.  Witnesses claim to have seen the Ford's
butler following them (identified from a picture) who died years earlier.  An investigative team
also got a picture during an investigation of a man sitting in one of Fords cars even though
there was no one there.
BATTENFIELD HOUSE
Fife Lake

Legend has it that a mass murderer, famous from poisoning several family members to garner
the social attention she thrived on, murdered two people in this house.  A very odd
manifestation of phenomena occurs in this house on the upstairs newel post, which is said to
catch fire, yet when checked, there is no heat or burn mark on it.
BOND STREET MANSION
Niles

This famous ghost story has been told for years.  It is said that a little boy lived with his
parents in this mansion in the 1800s.  One night, as the story goes, this little boy died of fright
when his bedside candle was blown out by a draft in the night.  The family cemetery is across
the street from the mansion and this is where the little boy was buried.  His mother was
understandably devestated by his death and had an underground tunnel built from the
mansion to the cemetery so she could visit his grave whenever she wanted to.  Supposedly,
the woman's ghost is seen to walk across the road and weep at her son's grave, then
disappear; every night a light appears in the upstairs bedroom window then mysteriously goes
out.
DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ART
Detroit

Several occurrences reported by night guards at this amazing museum.  The first phenomena
that has been reported by both afternoon and night guards involves a display called the Nail
Figure.  It is an African sculpture that appears to be impaled by several shards of wood
referred to as nails.  The guards report seeing this sculpture performing a tribal dance when
the lights go out.  Also, in the American Gallery there have been many reports of a loud crash
that sounds like a painting falling off the wall, yet when the guards investigate, there appears
to be no paintings out-of-order.  In this room there just happens to be a painting called "Court
of Death," which is believed to be what is causing all the noise.
NORTHVILLE TUNNELS
Northville

In the 40s and 50s, there were several mental asylums linked together by underground tunnels
that are said to have been used by hospital personnel to punish the severely insane, out of
control patients so that the more manageable patients werent aware of what was going on.  The
tunnels ran through the entire town, under roads, under buildings.  There is now a subdivision
going up for very expensive homes in this area and there is a high fine for anyone trying to
break into the tunnels.  There have been a few brave souls who have wandered into the tunnels
and reported hearing screaming, moaning and voices, feeling like someone is behind you,
crashes against walls when there is no one there.
JEFFERSON STREET
Detroit

Legend has it that a lttle girl was hit by a car on a stormy, rainy night, right where the tunnel to
Canada is.  She was apparently stuck under the car and was knocking but the driver never
heard her and she eventually died.  It is said now that when you drive by that specific area by
the tunnel and it is a stormy night, you will hear four distinct knocks under your car from the little
girl.
SHOE TREE
Highland

This tree has been talked about for years.   There is a very old, gnarled tree that stands on the
side of the road.  As the legend goes, a little boy used to walk by this tree every day on his way
to and from school.  He was picked on by bullies who would take his shoes and hang them in the
tree so that he couldnt get them.  One day he was found dead behind the tree, laying in the
swamp.  To this day, the tree is covered with pairs of shoes and it is said that, at midnight, if you
get out of your car and scream, the little boy will scream back for help.
DETROIT MASONIC TEMPLE
Detroit

The main story about this massive building, built in 1912 for the Masons, involves the builder,
George Mason.  He apparently  went broke financing the construction and then his wife left him
shortly after he filed for bankruptcy.  He apparently then jumped off the roof of the building to his
death.  The night watchmen have reported many sightings during their shifts including seeing a
transparent image of a man standing at the bottom of the stairs leading to the roof. The roof
door wont stay closed and locked even after the watchmen have locked it.  There were also cold
spots, footsteps when no one is there, shadows moving in the halls, doors slamming when they
were moments before locked and of course the feeling of being watched.  Many night watchmen
have left after only one night on duty and others refuse to even enter certain rooms.
MSU TUNNELS
East Lansing

These tunnels are about 90 years old and run underground all around north and south
campus, about 10.5 miles of tunnels in all.   All of the area steam lines are housed in these
seven foot tunnels and, because of that, the tunnels are very hot.  Bob Nestle, university
engineer, states that not only could people be overcome with heat normally, if a pipe were to
burst and expel all that steam into the tunnels, it would be as hot as an oven.  Over the years,
the tunnels have been broken into by campus kids and locals for a variety of reasons: thrill
seekers, D&D players, ritualistic activity.  Now they are locked down tight and campus police
will arrest and charge anyone trying to enter them illegally with criminal trespassing.
CAPITOL BUILDING ROTUNDA
Lansing

Supposedly this location is haunted by the spirit of a painter who was killed accidentally while
on the job.
MINNIE QUAY
Lake Huron
Forester

At the age of 15, Minnie Quay fell in love with a sailor whom her parents disapproved of.
When the sailor later died at sea, Minnie jumped to her death from the local pier, dressed all
in white.  It is said she still walks the beach where she fell, crying for her lost love.
JOHNSON CONTROLS
Plymouth

A woman who worked in the purchasing department was brutally murdered by her husband.
She has been spotted here numerous times by the security guards, wandering the offices.
